A distinction is drawn between information and communication, the former implying work and change (communication pain and self loss), the latter play and entertainment (communication pleasure and self enhancement). A play theory of communication is proposed as a broad abduction in which the self as attitudinal is axiomatic, and for which Q technique and its methodology provide operational pragmatics. Cultural implications are discussed, and research directions are outlined.
